My favorite Chinese type foundry has released this new typeface called Henti Senty Crayon (汉仪新蒂蜡笔体) that resembles handwriting with crayon, as the name suggests. The font design is well presented on how the texture and the sense of the writing with crayons, especially by children when they first exploring the fun of drawing and writing with crayons on a big piece of an artboard.

Hanyi Senty Crayon is packed with simplified and traditional Chinese characters, as well as Latin characters. You can download and use it for personal use only.

Yozai Font

Yozai Font (悠哉字体) is a free simplified Chinese font that comes with handwriting style. It was based on an open-sourced Japanese font by Y.OzFont, which was featured in Free Japanese Font website. The author basically taken the original font, and modified it to include simplified Chinese characters. It’s a huge font size with great number of glyphs that supports not only simplified Chinese, but also Japanese, Russian and extended latin languages. You can look for the language support for this font in a font app.

The best part is this font comes with three font weights: Light, Regular and Medium. According to the author it used to have Bold weight but it was removed. The font is open-sourced under SIL Open Font License, hence you can use it for free for personal and commercial projects. Shout out to the Yozai font creator LXGW for spending time working on this font.

LXGW Marker Gothic

LXGW Marker Gothic (霞鹜漫黑) is a free Chinese font that resembles handwriting with a flat tip marker pen. It was based on an open-sourced Japanese font called “Tanugo” by Tanuki font. The author took the original font that supports Japanese language writing system, and modified it to support simplified and traditional Chinese characters. Not only that, this font also supports other languages including Greek and Russian. You may check the font file for the language support.

The letter design style of LXGW Marker Gothic is quite distinctive. Other that the marker pen handwriting style, the letters are mainly constructed in straight lines with minimal curved strokes. It is like the straight lines are used whenever possible without compromising the legibility of the characters. The author also mentioned that the Chinese characters are designed to be conforming to the original style as much as possible rather than strictly following the construction of Chinese characters. But I can say, they are pretty recognisable.

LXGW Marker Gothic comes with one weight, and it’s free to download and use on personal and commercial projects, as it is released under SIL Open Font License. It has a total of 13,000 characters including simplified and traditional Chinese, so this font is pretty much got you covered for the common Chinese language usages support.

Huiwen Mincho Improved

Huiwen Mincho Improved (汇文明朝体（修正）) is an interesting free Chinese font that has the traditional printing texture effect. The text design was derived from the documents in the 50s or 60s, and it comes with both simplified and traditional Chinese characters. The simplified Chinese characters reproduced the printing effects of the books from the 1950s to 60s, while the traditional Chinese characters inherited the text printing styles of the old Chinese eras. Basically, it is a unique font that can bring out the old time with its richness and realistic printing effect.

The font was originally created by 特里王 where he shared it on a Chinese blogging platform called Zhihu, while the Improved version fixes a few characters and it’s being hosted on Github. This font is free to download and can be used on commercial projects. I think Huiwen Mincho is a great font to create the old school printing effect, or as a font for your e-book reading app if you longing to recreate the book texture that is similar to the old books.

Li Ke Jian Jian Ti preview

Li Ke Jian Jian Ti (栗壳坚坚体) is a free handwriting font and was the first font published by Li Ke Font Foundry. It was a dream of the font creator to produce a typeface. They were once received rejections from various big font foundries from their samples they submitted. Without giving up, they decided to make their own font and this font was the result of it. They initially handwritten the characters on papers, and then scanned and adjusted digitally with font software. According to them, creating this font is a learning process, and the font might be still have imperfections, and they will continue to improve the font and will release newer improved version in the future.

The handwriting style of Li Ke Jian Jian Ti is quite distinctive and perhaps towards more on the sketchy side. Therefore it might not be as easily read. It comes with 6700+ simplified Chinese characters, along with latin characters including alphanumerics and punctuations. You may download this font for free and use it for personal and commercial projects.

851Tegaki Zatsu (851手書き雑フォント) is a free Japanese font but it too supports extensive simplified and traditional Chinese characters. The handwriting style of this font is casually natural and appears slightly messy, as if the characters are written fast. Certain strokes can bee seen simplified or conjoined, and characters are slanting on a random angle towards front or back. However I think it’s still pretty readable and carries the essence of handwriting style font.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a Japanese font but supports pretty much Chinese characters. Not only that, it supports many other scripts including Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek, Thai and many more. The font author literally went above and beyond with this font and bundle all of them under one file. Therefore the file size of this font is a whopping 28.6MB, or more than 100 times larger than any typical English fonts. You can download this font for free and be used in any personal or commercial projects.
